3D rendering of Antibody in a biological environment

Visugromab (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT07219459) is a Phase 2b, randomized, blinded clinical trial investigating the efficacy and safety of visugromab (an investigational anti-GDF-15 antibody) in combination with nivolumab and lenvatinib compared to double placebo plus lenvatinib in participants with unresectable or metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and compensated liver function (Child-Pugh A) who have progressed after first-line treatment that included an anti-PD-(L)1 therapy. The trial is part of a multicenter research effort. At OSF HealthCare, the study is being led by Principal Investigator Robert McWilliams, MD, PhD, with Clinical Research Coordinator Peyton Swearingen, BS.

This study is testing a new combination of medicines for people with advanced liver cancer that has already been treated with immunotherapy. One of the medicines (visugromab) is investigational and is designed to help the immune system fight the cancer more effectively when used together with two other approved treatments. The goal is to see if this combination is safe and works better than the standard approach for patients whose cancer has continued to grow.

This study is meaningful for patients and our community because advanced liver cancer remains difficult to treat, especially after initial therapies stop working. Many patients have limited options, and research like this combination approach helps explore new strategies to address unmet needs, bringing innovative investigational therapies closer to those who need them most. Support for clinical trials through OSF HealthCare allows us to offer hope and advance care for future generations.

“At OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute, we are proud to participate in this important Phase 2b study, which brings a novel combination approach to patients in our region facing advanced liver cancer after prior treatment,” said Robert McWilliams, MD, PhD, Principal Investigator. “Clinical research like this provides eligible patients the opportunity to explore promising new treatment strategies while helping to advance care for the broader community.”

The study includes evaluation of the investigational therapy, with all treatment approaches being studied for research purposes in accordance with the approved study protocol.

All clinical research conducted at OSF HealthCare undergoes rigorous review and ongoing oversight to help ensure patient safety and ethical conduct.
